LAYOFFS: COPING WITH FEAR, ANGER AND MONEY

As oil and gas prices drop, many Oklahoman’s fear for their jobs. The anticipation of what ‘s to come makes fear and anxiety soar. All of us have a need for certainty in our lives. When we are faced with uncertainty in our jobs, it threatens our financial security and our family. It often leaves folks feeling powerless, scared, and angry. It’s normal to have those feelings but important to remember that you don’t have to let your circumstances control and define you.

While you may not have control of the circumstances, you have control over your own mind.  Certainty comes from inside you, not from what has happened to you. Your thoughts, your feelings and your response, is all up to you. You can begin to take control by developing a plan for your finances and creating a positive outlook for your future.

Revisit your budget. Look at what is really a necessity and what you can cut back on. It may require a temporary change in lifestyle and expectations. For example shelter, food, and transportation are a necessity. $5000 mortgages, fine dining, and Porsche payments are not. Be practical and realistic.

Apply for Unemployment and Prepare Your Resume’. Begin right away by utilizing your personal and professional networks for new opportunities. Get that resume’ up to speed and start sending it out as soon as possible.

Take Control of Your Retirement Assets. Consider a 401k Rollover. While there are positives and negatives to everything, you should consult with a financial professional about what option is best for you. Some people don’t want to leave their assets in the retirement plan of the company they are being dismissed from.
