Eat Your Black Eyed Peas and Other Financial Resolutions

In the South, eating black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day is said to bring prosperity in the New Year.  This tradition dates as far back as the Civil War and still continues today!

Twenty-five percent of the resolution makers that Norcross studied dropped off the second week of the New Year. Lord have mercy! Only 8% of people achieve their resolutions, according to research from psychologist John Norcross at the University of Scranton. Here are four ways to make it to the top 8%.

Make your goals SMART

Be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-Bound. Businesses across the United States have used this mnemonic device since the 1980’s to create and achieve goals for their businesses. This tool was created as a structure to motivate employees, and business owners alike.

Lean On Each Other

When you have a friend, relative, or spouse hold you accountable to your resolutions it will aid in keeping them. If your goal is to try a new diet, talk to others that are likeminded. If you are looking to get in better shape find workout buddy to cheer you on. Your investments should be no different.  Where you are invested matters. Who you trust matters. Look for a financial advisor that can help you plan for your goals.

Get back up and dust yourself off

Only 46% of people kept their New Year’s resolution six months after they made it, according to Norcross’ study. If you slip up don’t be afraid to try again. Hold your horses and don’t call off all your resolutions because you’re dissatisfied with one area. The goal of resolutions is to see growth over the year. You have to allow yourself room for error.
